Application of Argon in Welding

argon

Argon gas (Ar) is an inert gas material that is used quite commonly in many different industries, specifically in this article, the application of Argon gas in the shielding gas.

What is Shielded Gas?

This is a welding technology that uses inert or semi-inert gas with the purpose of using inert gas to protect the weld from oxygen and steam. Depending on the material being welded, gases in the air can degrade the quality of the weld or make the welding process difficult.

In welding methods, there are two primary welding methods is GMAW also known as metal inert gas (MIG) and GTAW, also known as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding

Why choose Argon gas in welding?

Although there are other shielding gases, Ar is the most used in GMAW and GTAW welding technology. Since during welding, when metal is exposed to temperatures that often exceed 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and the gas is non-toxic and non-flammable, so it can be used in such harsh environments.

The effect of argon gas in gas shielding welding technology

Pure argon is used to weld aluminum alloys and other non-ferrous metals, which can be welded on thick and thin sheet metal in the MIG/GMAW process, while for the TIG/GTAW process, refined Ar pure can be used in all situations, helping to protect some of the world’s most important equipment and machinery.

Types of Argon

There are several types of argon gas and mixtures used by welders during shielding gas welding

The most used standard for GTAW is 99.996% pure Ar, which is one of the most efficient levels a welder can use.

Sometimes welders will choose a mixture of 75% Ar and 25% carbon dioxide for GMAW projects. Since carbon dioxide can cause oxidation around the tungsten electrode, mixing should be avoided for GTAW.

However, with GMAW welds, the combination of argon with carbon dioxide can help create a hotter puddle, as well as deeper penetration of the weld.

Occasionally, a mixture of 75% Ar and 25% helium is used in both GMAW and GTAW welds, but it is uncommon and is usually only used in industrial environments.
